Welcome to the 2005 production of Ruddygore

Welcome to this year’s production, ‘Ruddygore’, and this our 30th Anniversary year.
‘Ruddygore’ is Gilbert’s excellent parody of the melodramatic genre and exploiting the Victorian fascination with the gothic.
In this production of ‘Ruddygore’, we have tried to return, as near as possible, to Gilbert’s original libretto by reinstating a number of cuts made in the dialogue over the years, putting in Sir Ruthen’s patter song in Act 2, reverting to the original ending which was originally thought to be too ‘sensational’ for a delicate Victorian audience, and also the first performance of a rediscovered duet for Mad Margaret and Sir Despard, which Sullivan never set to music, but we are fortunate that our musical director, Mike Crofts, has taken up the challenge to follow in Sullivan’s footsteps.
With this in mind, we felt we were justified in returning the opera to the original spelling of the title of ‘Ruddygore’, as opposed to the later, more familiar spelling of ‘Ruddigore’.

Synopsis

None of the village girls stand a chance at marriage, because all the young men of the village love Rose Maybud, but do not measure up to her strict rules of etiquette.
Robin Oakapple also loves Rose, but he is too shy to court her. This is partly because he is, in reality, the accursed Baronet of Ruddigore, Sir Ruthen Murgatroyd, in disguise.
His brother Sir Despard carries out the curse: he must commit one major crime per day or die in agony.
Robin's foster brother, Richard, seeking Rose for himself, tells Sir Despard of Robin's deception, and Sir Despard transfers the curse back to Robin.
The ghosts of his ancestors step from their picture frames to confront Robin for failing to conscientiously carry out his duty. Robin agrees to execute the curse faithfully but finds a clever solution to the whole problem after all!
