Welcome to the 1993 production of Pirates of Penzance

Synopsis

The curtain rises on a rocky cove on the Cornish coast, where the famous Pirates of Penzance are discovered, with their King and his Lieutenant Samuel. They have gathered to say farewell to their apprentice Frederic who will be out of his indentures at midday.
He tells them that they fail so often in their raids because word has got about that they never attack vessels smaller than theirs nor ones manned by orphans.
He holds them in high regard, but warns them that in future it will be his duty to devote himself to their extermination.
He imagines he must be in love with Ruth who was his nursery-maid, who apprenticed him as a child by mistake to a PIRATE instead of to a PILOT. She is the only woman he has ever seen, but when Major-General Stanley and his beautiful daughters suddenly arrive for a picnic, he instantly looses interest in poor Ruth, and his heart to Mabel, the most beautiful of them.

In Act 2 we see Frederic set out on his path of exterminating the pirates, assisted by a gallant band of policemen, when to his dismay, the Pirate King and Ruth appear with the distressing news that as he was born in Leap Year on the 29th February, and was apprenticed until his twenty-first birthday, this will not be until he is 84.
He thus feels it is now his duty to rejoin the pirates and leave his beloved Mabel.
However, all ends happily after the fight between the police and the pirates as Ruth reveals that they are not as evil as they seem but are all noblemen who have gone wrong. The Major-General feels they are all suitable husbands for his daughters, Ruth and the Police Sergeant discover each other, and Frederic claims Mabel, so all is well.
