Welcome to the 1977 production of Iolanthe

Synopsis

Iolanthe has always been a favourite and also something of a landmark for Gilbert & Sullivan lovers. As a landmark, the opera was commissioned by D'Oyly Carte for the opening of his new theatre, The Savoy.
All three men staked their careers on Iolanthe. The production was the first piece of theatre to be lit by electricity in England and is one work for which Sullivan cared to compose his own overture.

The work offers the irresistible chorus combination of peers of the realm with Fairies from an Anderson Library; a patter song to end all patter songs (and all singers of patter songs); an infamous 'Joke' Trio; a plot with the intricacies of a 'Mikado' and moments as poignant as the close of 'Yeomen of the Guard'. The whole is, and we trust will be for you, infused with the vitality and sparkle of Gilbert & Sullivan at their harmonious best.
